How Paul Wikstrom challenged his opponent—and changed politics in Minnesota

Paul Wikstrom recounts how he challenged his opponent's eligibility based on residency requirements, leading to court actions that stopped the DFL Trifecta by shifting the balance of power in the Minnesota House of Representatives.

The most significant result of Paul Wikstrom's challenge was that a court ruled his opponent, Curtis Johnson, did not meet Minnesota's residency requirements to serve in House District 40B. As a result, Johnson was prevented from taking office despite winning the November 2024 election by more than 7,500 votes.

1. Election victory invalidated

• Ramsey County Judge Leonardo Castro found that Johnson had not established residency in District 40B for the required six months before the election.

• The court granted Wikstrom's election contest and ordered that Johnson not be sworn into office.

2. House balance of power changed

• At the start of the 2025 legislative session, the Minnesota House had been expected to be tied 67-67.

• Because the 40B seat was declared vacant, Republicans temporarily held a 67-66 advantage.
